The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) has been established in pursuance of a recommendation forwarded by the Administration Reforms Commission (ARC), in its report on personal administration. ARC drew attention to the fact that bulk of the staff of the Government at the center and in the state, belonged to class III and class IV categories. Referring in particular to the identical nature of qualifications needed for entry into such posts in various offices, the commission advocated pooling of the requirements of non-technical posts by different department and selection of personnel either by joint recruitment or through a recruitment board. Accordingly, SSC came into operation on 26th Sep. 1977. it is an attached office of the department of personnel and training.
The primary function of SSC is to make recruitments to non-technical Group ‘C’ and Group ‘B’ gazette and non-gazette posts in Ministries /Departments, the attached and subordinate offices of the Government of India and the CAG and the offices of Accountant General. The commission is responsible for formulating policies, including schemes of Examination and other procedures for smooth conduct of examinations/selection tests. The Staff Selection Commission has Headquarters at New Delhi.
Staff Selection Commission Conducts Combined Graduate Level Examination (SSC-CGLE) for recruitment to different Civil posts, for which Graduation from a recognized University is the minimum Educational Qualification. The recruitment for these posts is done in departments of Central Secretariate Service/Central Vigilance Commission/Intelligence Bureau/Ministry of Railways/Ministry of External Affairs/Ministry of Defense/CBI/NCB/CBIC/CBDT and a few other Ministries/Departments/Organizations of the Central Govt.
SSC conducts following exams
- Combined Graduate Level Exam
- Combined Higher Secondary Level: 10+2 Exam
- SI in CAPF’s, ASI in CRPF, CISF Exam
- Multitasking (Non-Technical) Staff Exam
- Constable (GD) in CAPF’s & Assam Rifles
- Stenographer Grade ‘C&D’ Exam
